Good leaders don’t need to be right

Good leaders care more about getting to the right answer than having the right answer.

I was coaching a new leader recently, whose working model of leadership was that the leader comes up with all of the answers.

Through our coaching, he said that it was an epiphany to him that his job as a manager was to help his people find the right answer; not that they would have to come up with all the right answers.

He said that the format of his coaching with me was completely different from what he expected. “I was expecting to be talked to more than I talked,” he said.

He shifted to intentionally having his team do more of the talking, with him providing encouragement and guidance where needed.

This is what Amy Edmondson talks about in her enlightening book, “The Fearless Organization.” It highlights the link between leaders who ask questions and teams that thrive.
